Acute pesticide poisoning is a significant public health concern that affects not only the individuals who are poisoned but also their caregivers. The emotional and psychological toll of caring for a loved one who has been poisoned can be substantial, and research has shown that caregivers are at a higher risk of developing depression. However, the relationship between family function, coping style, and depression in caregivers of patients with acute pesticide poisoning is not well understood. To address this knowledge gap, a cross-sectional study was conducted among caregivers of patients with acute pesticide poisoning at a hospital in Jinan, Shandong Province, from November 2022 to June 2023. The study aimed to explore the relationship between family function, coping style, and depression among caregivers and to identify potential targets for intervention. The study found that the average depression score among caregivers was 5.66, with a standard deviation of 4.29, and that the incidence of depression was 54.7%. This suggests that depression is a significant concern among caregivers of patients with acute pesticide poisoning. The study also found that family function may play a crucial role in shaping the mental health outcomes of caregivers, with both direct and indirect effects on depression. Specifically, the study suggested that family function may influence depression through coping styles, highlighting the importance of positive coping mechanisms in mitigating the risk of depression. The findings of this study have important implications for the development of health education and intervention programs aimed at supporting caregivers of patients with acute pesticide poisoning. By focusing on improving family functioning and promoting positive coping mechanisms, these programs may be able to reduce the risk of depression and improve the overall well-being of caregivers. Future research should build on these findings to develop and test effective interventions that address the unique needs of caregivers of patients with acute pesticide poisoning.
