A recent study has revealed a significant rise in Delta-8 Tetrahydrocannabinol (∆8-THC) exposures reported to US Poison Centers, bringing attention to the urgent need for consistent public policy and regulation. The study, which examined Delta-8 THC exposure trends from 2021 to 2022, highlighted regional differences in Delta-8 THC poisoning, with the Southern US experiencing the highest rates.

The data shows a dramatic 79% increase in poisoning from Delta-8 THC during the two years. States where Delta-8 THC was unregulated or where cannabis (Delta-9 THC) use remained illegal reported significantly higher exposure rates. For example, in 2022, the mean rate of Delta-8 THC exposures in states where cannabis was illegal was 1.64 per 100,000 population, compared to just 0.52 per 100,000 in states where cannabis was legal. These findings emphasize the impact of cannabis legalization on Delta-8 THC exposure, as well as the health risks associated with unregulated Delta-8 THC products.

Further analysis revealed that Delta-8 THC exposure rates were lower in states with stricter regulations and higher in states with a more permissive legal status regarding Delta-8 THC. This suggests that consistent Delta-8 THC public policy could significantly reduce the number of poisonings. The study underscores the importance of addressing both legal and unregulated Delta-8 THC poisoning, as well as the potential benefits of aligning Delta-8 THC regulations with existing cannabis laws.

As public health concerns over Delta-8 THC continue to grow, particularly in the Southern US, experts recommend a uniform regulatory approach to mitigate the risks. The study's findings highlight the need for policymakers to consider the variations in Delta-8 THC poisoning rates by state and region and to implement measures that protect consumers from the dangers of unregulated Delta-8 THC products.

The comparison of Delta-8 THC and Delta-9 THC exposure also underscores the complex landscape of cannabis regulations and their implications for public health. As more states evaluate their stance on cannabis and Delta-8 THC, the need for effective public policy becomes increasingly evident. This study serves as a critical call to action for consistent regulation and increased awareness of the health risks associated with Delta-8 THC.
